Father’s Day

“Luke, I am your father!”
–Darth Vader to Luke Skywalker, in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

If I’m being honest, Father’s Day was never really worth celebrating for us. It only became worthwhile when we became fathers ourselves, another bond to add to the uncountable many that already exist.

I remember when my brother told me I was going to be an uncle and he a dad. He was super excited – happy. His eyes beamed with excitement. Just pure joy. I knew then what I felt all my life and had already experienced firsthand: My brother was born to be a father. He just had it in him, the same way he had it in him to be a big brother.

I was very happy for him and, at the same time, a bit envious. My wife and I had been trying for at least six months to conceive, and my brother goes and shoots a hole-in-one from the hip without even looking. Go figure. Fate was funny I thought, however, she had even more in store for us. Two weeks later I broke the news to my brother that he would be an uncle and I, myself, a father too. We were all very happy. Father’s Day took on a whole new meaning for us. We were sure to celebrate each one since, all of us, together.

Here’s wishing you another very Happy Father’s Day, bro.
